Why Two 30x50 Quotes Can Be $20,000 Apart

Length is the cheapest dimension to buy. Extending a 30-foot-wide building from 40 to 50 feet adds one more bay of purlins, girts, and sheeting plus one more frame line. It does not change the span, the frame depth, or the roof structure. Per square foot, the added 300 SF costs meaningfully less than the first 1,200 did — which is why so many buyers who price a 30x40 end up ordering a 30x50.

Bay spacing determines your column count. A 50-foot length is typically framed as two 25-foot bays or three bays at roughly 16.7 feet. Wider bay spacing means fewer columns but heavier frames and larger individual footings; tighter spacing means more columns carrying less each. Both work — they just produce different foundations.

Watch the door wall. Most 30x50 buildings put the overhead doors on the 30-foot endwall. If you want a door on the 50-foot sidewall instead, the frame needs jamb reinforcement at that opening and the header load has to path down into the foundation. It is not expensive if it is designed in from the start, and it is a headache if it is added later.

/ THE SLAB

Concrete for a 30x50 Slab

A 30x50 slab is 1,500 square feet with 160 linear feet of perimeter. A 4-inch slab field is roughly 18.5 cubic yards; with thickened edges and column footings most pours land between 24 and 27 cubic yards — three truckloads.

At 25-foot bay spacing you have three frame lines and six columns; at 16.7-foot spacing, four frame lines and eight columns. Either way the load path is the same: the roof and wall loads collect into the frames, travel down the columns, and land on the base plates. Everything the foundation does happens at those discrete points.

Because the building is 50 feet long, control joint layout matters more than it does on a 30x40. Concrete shrinks as it cures, and a long, narrow slab wants to crack transversely. A planned joint pattern — typically panels no larger than about 12 to 15 feet on a side for a 4-inch slab — decides where those cracks happen. Skipping joints does not prevent cracking; it just makes it random.

What the Foundation Has to Do at 30x50

The 30-foot span keeps thrust manageable. Horizontal thrust at the column bases scales with span and roof load. At 30 feet it is real but generally handled with a thickened edge or a modest hairpin detail rather than the tie rods a 40-foot span often needs. This is part of why 30-wide buildings are economical to found.

Uplift still governs in high-wind country. A 1,500 SF building is light. In coastal or high-plains wind zones, the net uplift at the windward columns can exceed the dead load holding the frame down, and the footing has to supply the difference through its own weight or through soil engagement. This check is where DIY foundation designs most often fail.

The extra bay changes the tributary areas. Interior frames on a 30x50 pick up load from both adjacent bays, so the interior columns typically carry noticeably more than the endwall columns. Footings are not all the same size — designing them all to the largest reaction wastes concrete, and designing them all to the smallest fails.
